gas cooker

The igniter is one of the most frequently used items in your cooker setup, which means that is also one of the most common to experience problems with. Although there are several types of cooker ignition systems, each one experiences a set of similar functionality problems which arise across cooker models.

Cooker Ignition Not Working - Troubleshooting

To help you diagnose the problem and resolve it efficiently, here are a few things to look out for:

A Dirty Hob

The problem with your ignition could be as simple as the burner, valves and ignition being clogged with food and grease that may have built up over time. Before inspecting, make sure that the gas supply is switched off, then inspect the areas which could be impacting your ignition. If problems persist after a thorough clean, you will need to look elsewhere to find the source of the problem. To avoid this issue, be sure to invest in some appropriate hob cleaning products that will help to prevent damage.

Faulty Ignition System

There are a number of issues that can impact the performance of your ignition system, including the following:

  • Electric Circuitry: If your ignition operates on an electric system, there could be a number of issues causing the performance to cease, including a broken circuit breaker, loose wiring or a faulty ignition switch.
  • No Spark: Turn off the gas and test the ignition button on your cooker. If there is no clicking sound and you cannot see any sparks, then your igniter will need to be replaced.

Gas Supply

If there does not seem to be a problem with the ignition components, it may be the case that the problem is with the gas supply. Here are a few things that you can check to assess whether or not this is the source of the issue:

  • Empty Tank: Check the upward facing gauge on the top of the tank. If this is at 5% or less, this means that it is empty.
  • Isolation Valves Off: There are usually two valves, one at the gas tank and another outside your property. If either of these is switched off this will impact your supply.
  • Excess Flow Valve Engaged: This safety device will activate if there is a sudden surge of gas, and will also be turned off manually when activity is being carried out on the tank. I this is the case, it will need to be reset to restore the supply.
*Important: do not attempt to perform gas repair work if you are not qualified to do so. If you suspect that there is an issue, call a Gas Safe engineer to correctly identify and resolve the problem.*

Your oven fan is an essential part for maintaining the function of your appliance, so when this becomes faulty, you're sure to notice a problem straight away. The telltale sign that your oven fan is not working is unevenly cooked food. Because your oven fan is responsible for distributing the heat evenly inside your oven cavity, to ensure your meals are cooked accurately. So what could be preventing your oven's fan from working?

Why is the Oven Fan Not Working?

Faulty oven fan performance is usually due to one of two parts that your fan relies upon in order to function correctly:

The Oven Fan Motor

If your oven fan is not working, it is likely that your oven's fan or fan motor has become faulty. These parts are the main components of your oven fan, and they help to ensure your food is cooked evenly. Some signs that these parts have failed include excess noise coming from the fan, along with the element successfully heating, but proving ineffective in circulating this heat around your oven. The Oven Fan Element

Another common cause for your oven fan not working is oven fan element failure. You may pick up on the faulty element if your oven appears to be working fine, but fails to generate heat. You may also notice some visual signs that your oven fan element has failed, such as burning or bulging. Whether you need to replace faulty components such as the inner glass and door seal, or you simply want to give your appliance a more thorough clean, it can be incredibly useful to know how to remove your oven door. Luckily, this is usually a very simple and straightforward process for most ovens, so you won't have to worry about remembering any complicated steps or investing in special equipment.  So to find out how to remove and replace your oven door, keep reading:

How to Remove Your Oven Door:

  1. Make sure that your oven is switched off, disconnecting any power supplies.
  2. Lower the oven door and inspect the hinge, this will let you know how to lock the hinges in place for removal.
  3. Lock the hinges in place either by: Turing the screw with a half turn (two-part hinge system), folding the catch over (one part hinge system), fitting a pin into the hole (pin type hinge) or by folding the latch back into the glass (latch over type).
  4. Once you have locked the clips, place your hands on either side of the oven door, lifting it to a 45-degree angle.
  5. Grip the sides of the door firmly, then gently lift the door upwards and out of the hinges.

Replacing Your Oven Door:

Once you've successfully removed your oven door and completed your desired application, it should be fairly simple to replace your oven door by following the same steps in reverse:

  1. First, hold the door at the same angle with your hands at either side, before lowering the hinges into the slots.
  2. Once the hinges are in place, carefully lower the oven door to horizontal level, so that it's in the same position as when you began removing it.
  3. Replacing the locking mechanism either by clipping it into place and/or replacing the screws.
  4. Examine the oven door before closing it, to ensure that it has been successfully reattached.

  • A Phillips-Head Screwdriver - This will come in handy if you need to pry the hinges out of their sockets, or if your hinges are screwed into place.
  • Hinge Lubricant - This will help to ease the hinge movement if it has become jammed or is very stiff.
  • A Pin or Allen Key - Some oven door hinges come with a hole that allows you to lock the hinges into place for removal.
